Jackson, Kentucky – Snow and periods of wintry mix are expected to impact eastern Kentucky beginning early Friday morning and continuing into early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.
Forecasters released updated precipitation timing Thursday evening showing several rounds of snow, rain, and wintry mix across the region. The timing and precipitation type will vary by location, with snow favored during the early morning and overnight hours and brief transitions to rain or mixed precipitation during the day Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, communities including Flemingburg, Morehead, Mount Sterling, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Hazard, London, Somerset, Harlan, and Middlesboro are expected to see snow during the Friday morning commute. Some locations may experience a temporary change to rain or a wintry mix by late morning or afternoon before colder air returns Friday night.
Snow is forecast to redevelop across much of eastern Kentucky Friday evening and persist into the overnight hours, tapering off early Saturday morning. While snowfall amounts may vary, repeated rounds of precipitation increase the risk of slick roads, especially where temperatures hover near freezing.
Travel impacts are most likely along major roadways including Interstate 75, U.S. Route 23, U.S. Route 421, and state highways such as KY-15, KY-80, and KY-114. Reduced visibility and icy patches may develop during heavier snow bursts and overnight periods.
The National Weather Service urges drivers to use caution, especially during early morning and nighttime travel. Bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads may become slick before primary highways.
This weather pattern may be especially impactful for commuters, students, and workers traveling during the Friday morning commute or late Friday night.
