Jackson, Kentucky – Drivers across eastern Kentucky could face sudden downpours, damaging wind gusts and brief tornado potential Wednesday afternoon as a strong cold front sweeps across the region during peak travel hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk covers nearly all of eastern Kentucky Wednesday afternoon through late evening. Forecasters say damaging winds will be the primary hazard as storms organize along the advancing front, though an isolated tornado or a pocket of large hail cannot be ruled out.

Communities from London and Somerset to Jackson, Hazard, Prestonsburg and Pikeville could see storms intensify quickly during the late afternoon. Travel routes including Hal Rogers Parkway, the Mountain Parkway and KY-15 may experience sudden visibility drops and debris from strong wind gusts. Utility crews are also monitoring conditions as wind-driven storms could briefly knock out power in scattered areas.

Warm, windy air building ahead of the front will help storms strengthen as they move east through the Cumberland Plateau and Appalachian foothills. Emergency managers advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, charge mobile devices and have multiple ways to receive warnings if storms become severe.

The storm threat is expected to shift east later Wednesday night as the cold front exits the region, though additional advisories or warnings could be issued if stronger cells develop during the afternoon.
