Jackson, Kentucky – Drivers across eastern Kentucky could face dangerous travel conditions Saturday afternoon and evening as a cold front pushes across the region, potentially bringing thunderstorms capable of 60 mph wind gusts along key roadways including KY 15, KY 80, and I-75.

Warm and humid air building across the region ahead of the approaching front will create an environment supportive of stronger storms by the second half of the day. If storms develop as expected, damaging straight-line winds will be the primary hazard.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, thunderstorms could organize into a line during the Saturday afternoon and evening hours, increasing the potential for strong wind gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs and creating scattered power outages across parts of eastern Kentucky.

Communities including Jackson, Hazard, London, and Somerset may see storms move through during the late afternoon or early evening. Motorists traveling along KY 15 between Jackson and Hazard or I-75 near London and Corbin could encounter sudden heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and rapidly changing visibility as storms pass through.

Farther east toward Pikeville and Prestonsburg, storms may arrive later in the evening along the US 23 corridor, where gusty winds could blow debris onto roads and create hazardous driving conditions.

Forecasters say confidence in severe storm development depends partly on morning weather conditions. Widespread clouds or earlier showers could limit storm intensity, while clearer skies would allow the atmosphere to become more unstable and increase the severe weather risk.

Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts Saturday, secure loose outdoor items, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings if storms intensify during the evening hours.
