Jackson, Kentucky – Travel conditions across eastern Kentucky are expected to worsen quickly this evening as rain transitions to a wintry mix and then all snow, raising concerns for slick and snow-covered roads overnight and into Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, rain showers will change over to a wintry mix late this afternoon before becoming snow by evening as colder air moves in. Snow showers are expected to persist through the overnight hours and continue into Thursday, with periods of steady snowfall affecting the region.
Road conditions are expected to deteriorate along KY-15, KY-30, and KY-52, as well as secondary roads across Breathitt, Perry, Wolfe, and surrounding counties. The evening commute and overnight travel hours will see the highest risk, as temperatures fall and untreated surfaces become slick. Visibility may also be reduced at times during heavier snow showers.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are monitoring conditions, but drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel overnight. Those who must be on the roads should slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, especially on bridges and higher elevations.
Snow showers may linger into Thursday, prolonging hazardous travel conditions into the morning hours. Additional advisories or winter weather statements could be issued as the system continues to evolve.
