Jackson, Ky. – Heavy rain from slow-moving thunderstorms could trigger flash flooding in eastern Kentucky through 8 p.m. tonight, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch for Jackson and surrounding counties. Low-lying areas, creeks, and urban streets are most at risk for rapid water rises.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, the heaviest downpours may lead to localized flash flooding, especially in areas that have already received recent rainfall. The watch covers much of southeastern Kentucky, including Hazard, London, Pikeville, and Somerset. Areas outside the official watch zone may still experience heavy rainfall.

Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid water-covered roads and be alert for sudden flooding near small streams. If flooding is observed, residents should move to higher ground and avoid walking through moving water.

The threat will ease later tonight as storms shift out of the region, but additional rain chances are possible later in the week. The Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m., with further advisories possible if storms persist.
