Jackson, Kentucky – A passing weather disturbance may affect New Year’s Eve travel with rain and snow showers overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, chances for rain and snow showers will increase late Wednesday night into New Year’s Eve, with light snow accumulations possible mainly northeast of the KY-15 corridor. While widespread impacts are not expected, brief slick spots could develop in higher elevations and less-traveled roads.
Temperatures tonight are forecast to fall into the mid-20s to lower 30s, allowing any snow showers to briefly stick in colder locations. Areas closer to and southwest of KY-15, including Jackson and nearby communities, are more likely to see rain or a rain-snow mix with limited accumulation.
For New Year’s Day (Thursday), rain and snow chances will gradually decrease through the day. High temperatures are expected to range from 34 to 47 degrees, with improving road conditions as precipitation tapers off.
Dry weather returns Friday as high pressure builds into eastern Kentucky. Temperatures will climb slightly above average, with highs reaching the low to mid-50s, followed by mostly cloudy but calmer conditions into Saturday.
Drivers traveling late tonight or early Thursday along KY-15, KY-30, and surrounding mountain roads are urged to use caution, especially in areas northeast of Jackson where light snow may briefly accumulate.
This timing may impact overnight workers, early commuters, and New Year’s Eve travelers returning home after celebrations.
