Jackson, Kentucky – High temperatures and oppressive humidity are sending heat indices soaring above 100°F across eastern Kentucky, with the risk of heat-related illnesses peaking through Wednesday night. Many cities from Morehead to Middlesboro are under a heat advisory as actual temperatures in the 90s combine with stifling moisture to create dangerous outdoor conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, heat indices will range from 100°F to 110°F today and Wednesday for most of the region. Overnight lows will offer little relief, hovering in the low to mid-70s, which can increase health risks for vulnerable groups, especially those without air conditioning.

Cities including Prestonsburg, Hazard, and Pikeville are expected to experience maximum heat indices between 105°F and 110°F. The combination of high heat and humidity can rapidly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. The local health department advises avoiding strenuous exercise, seeking air-conditioned spaces, and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles.

Significant relief is on the way as a cold front is expected to move through Kentucky late Thursday, bringing cooler air for the end of the week. Until then, heat advisories remain in effect, with updates possible as conditions develop.
