Black River Falls, WI – Blizzard winds and drifting snow are making many Jackson County roads nearly impassable.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, blizzard conditions continued Sunday as the first round of a winter storm began exiting the region while strong winds increased across the area.

Officials said wind gusts between 40 and 55 mph are producing significant snow drifting, creating dangerous travel conditions throughout Jackson County. Authorities warned that roadway conditions are expected to worsen as the storm continues through the day.

A second round of accumulating snow is forecast to move into the region later Sunday afternoon and continue into Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office update. Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve by Monday around noon, when cleanup and road clearing operations may begin catching up.

Currently, officials say most county roads are snow-covered and slippery, and secondary roads are almost impassable in some locations.

Public safety crews and snow removal teams are working throughout the storm, but officials say the demand for emergency and road services is extremely high as crews respond to incidents across the county.

Residents are strongly urged to stay off the roads and travel only if absolutely necessary until conditions improve.

Anyone experiencing an emergency should call 911, the sheriff’s office said. For non-emergency assistance, residents can contact the Jackson County Communications Center at 715-284-5357, ext. 180. Officials noted that response to non-emergency calls may be delayed as emergency calls are prioritized.

The sheriff’s office said additional updates will be provided as conditions change.

One local note: the travel warning may particularly affect students and younger workers commuting to jobs or school on Monday morning if conditions persist overnight.
