Gold Hill, OR – The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is mourning the loss of retired Deputy William “Red” Smith, a 27-year veteran of the department, who passed away on September 20 in Gold Hill at the age of 78.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Smith—known affectionately as “Red”—served the community for nearly three decades with commitment and pride. During his lifetime, Smith worked in many roles, including ranch hand, firefighter, police officer, and armored truck driver. His family shared that serving as a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy was the role he valued most.

Smith, an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and fishing. He married his late wife, Stephanie, in 1986, and the couple spent more than 38 years together before her passing earlier in 2024.

Deputy Smith is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Sheriff’s officials expressed their condolences, saying, “Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Thank you, Red, for your many years of dedicated service to the Jackson County community. Rest in peace.”
