Sant’Angelo, Italy – A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck beneath the Tyrrhenian region south of Naples late Monday night, registering deep underground but strong enough to be detected across parts of Campania within seconds of the rupture.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 11:03 p.m. UTC about 16 kilometers south-southeast of Sant’Angelo on the island of Ischia. The event originated roughly 373 kilometers below the surface, classifying it as a deep earthquake that typically spreads shaking over a wider region while reducing severe surface damage.

Communities across Ischia, Forio, and Ischia Porto sit within roughly 20 kilometers of the epicenter zone. Naples, a city of more than 900,000 residents located about 40 kilometers northeast, lies within the broader area where light shaking may have been noticed in high-rise buildings.

Early automated assessments from the USGS show a green PAGER alert, indicating a low likelihood of widespread damage or casualties. Ground failure and liquefaction estimates also remain minimal.

The Mediterranean basin experiences frequent seismic activity as the African Plate slowly converges with the Eurasian Plate, compressing and shifting crust across southern Europe and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Seismologists will continue reviewing the event overnight, and additional seismic updates or aftershock monitoring could follow if activity changes in the region.
