Des Moines, IA – Strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast to impact parts of Iowa this afternoon through early Tuesday morning, bringing potential travel and safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, storms are expected to develop beginning around 12 p.m. Monday and continue into the overnight hours. The highest risk covers northern Iowa, where damaging winds up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and hail up to the size of quarters are possible.
Areas including Mason City, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo are in the risk zone. While the threat is categorized as “isolated,” forecasters caution that even a single severe storm can cause significant damage or disruptions.
The timing of the storms stretches from Monday afternoon through around midnight, with lingering impacts possible into early Tuesday morning. Gusty winds and lightning may affect evening commutes, outdoor activities, and overnight travel.
Officials advise residents to closely monitor weather alerts and move indoors if thunder is heard. “When thunder roars, head indoors,” the NWS reminded in its Monday morning update.
Travelers and farmers in northern and central Iowa should be prepared for sudden weather changes and secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.
