Coupeville, WA – Residents across Island County will face new fire restrictions starting Friday, October 3, as officials issue a burn ban due to heightened fire danger.

According to the Island County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Rick Felici, who also serves as the county’s Fire Marshal, declared a Type I burn ban beginning at midnight Friday. The ban prohibits all outdoor burning of natural debris, even with a permit.

Recreational fires remain permitted, but only in approved fire pits. Propane or briquette grills and self-contained camp stoves are also allowed.

Officials said the decision comes after “reduced moisture levels, low humidity, and warmer weather” increased the risk of fire throughout Island County, which includes Whidbey and Camano Islands. The order was made in coordination with local fire districts and the Northwest Clean Air Agency.

Residents are urged to report violations to 911. The sheriff’s office noted that the ban is currently set at Level 1, meaning campfires in approved pits are still permitted. Authorities said the ban could be lifted in the near future if conditions improve.

For more information, residents can call the Island County Health Department at 360-679-7350 or the Northwest Clean Air Agency at 360-428-1617.
