Watseka, Illinois – A countywide burn ban took effect Tuesday in Iroquois County amid extreme wind and dry conditions.

According to the Iroquois County Emergency Management Agency, the Eastern Illinois Mutual Aid Fire Association, in conjunction with the Iroquois County Board Chairman, has issued a countywide burn ban effective immediately as of Tuesday, February 24.

Officials said the ban prohibits all open burning, including landscape waste, agricultural waste, household trash and garbage. The restriction also includes consumer fireworks.

Ashkum Fire Chief and MABAS Division 37 President Jeff Glenn said extreme wind conditions and dry grass have increased the risk of out-of-control brush fires. “Everything is just tinder dry,” Glenn said in the release.

The Fire Chiefs of Iroquois County have authority under Illinois State Law (70 ILCS 705/8.20) to implement the ban. Fire departments may issue fines for violations after warning and extinguishing fires. According to the agency, fines start at $100 and may double for a second violation.

The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice.

Officials urged residents to comply to reduce fire risk and prevent strain on emergency responders. The restriction may affect rural property owners, agricultural operations and residents who routinely burn yard debris. College students and young renters should also be aware that recreational fires and fire pits fall under open-burning restrictions.

No timeline has been provided for lifting the ban.
