Iroquois County, IL – Firefighters in Iroquois County responded Tuesday to several large field fires near Onarga, fueled by intense winds. Fire departments from Onarga, Crescent City, Gilman, Milford, and Woodland rushed to contain the flames, which quickly spread across dry fields.
According to local reports, area farmers assisted firefighters, using disc harrows to cut firebreaks and slow the fire’s advance. The collaboration helped contain the blaze, preventing more extensive damage to local farmland.
Additional fires broke out later near Papineau, St. Anne, and Ogden in neighboring Champaign County. The Ogden fire reportedly ignited two more fires within Iroquois County soon after, keeping firefighters on high alert.
A burn ban remains in effect across Iroquois County as authorities work to manage the heightened fire risk. High winds have created hazardous conditions, making fire containment challenging for first responders and agricultural workers alike.
