Iron River, MI – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Iron and Southern Houghton Counties through 7 a.m. Thursday, as another round of heavy snow and strong winds continues to sweep across the western Upper Peninsula.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, total snow accumulations are expected to range from 3 to 21 inches, depending on elevation and proximity to Lake Superior. The heaviest snow will occur closer to the lake, while areas around and southeast of Crystal Falls may see lighter totals. Winds are forecast to gust up to 45 mph, creating widespread blowing snow and near-zero visibility.

Forecasters warn travel could become very difficult to impossible, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Whiteout conditions may lead to road closures and scattered power outages, as gusty winds could bring down tree branches and power lines.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including food, water, and flashlights. Those who must drive should exercise extreme caution and allow extra time for travel.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by Thursday morning as snow showers taper and winds diminish.
