Des Moines, IA – A mainly dry and warm forecast is in store for today as afternoon highs reach into the mid-80s to low 90s. Slight chance for a few showers and storms in portions of southern Iowa late tonight. The severe weather threat is low, but brief heavy downpours and gusty winds are possible.

According to the National Weather Service Des Moines, the extended forecast continues to focus on increasing heat and humidity as we round out July and head into August. Highs in the 90s and humid conditions will push heat index values to near or above 100 at times, especially as the heat peaks around the middle of the week.

Periodic chances for scattered showers and storm activity will linger through the week, with the highest chances looking to be Sunday night into Monday. Above-normal temperatures are favored to persist as we move toward next weekend and the days beyond as a stout ridge of high pressure dominates the weather pattern.

Today’s temperatures are expected to range from 85 to 90 degrees. Sunday and Monday will see highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, with Tuesday and Wednesday reaching the low to mid-90s. Slightly cooler temperatures are expected on Thursday and Friday, with highs in the mid-80s.
