La Crosse, WI — A strong early spring storm system is set to impact parts of Iowa and Wisconsin through early Wednesday, bringing a mix of severe thunderstorms, accumulating snow, and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, the system will move in Tuesday afternoon and persist through 7 a.m. Wednesday. Thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and heavy downpours are expected to develop late Tuesday night, particularly in northeast Iowa and southern Wisconsin. A Level 2 “Slight Risk” zone for severe weather includes cities such as Decorah, IA; Prairie du Chien, WI; and Platteville, WI.
Snowfall totals will vary across the region, with central Wisconsin likely to receive 2 to 4 inches of heavy, wet snow. Areas such as Eau Claire, Medford, and Wausau could see even higher totals, especially if more of the precipitation falls as snow instead of rain.
Wind gusts will be a concern both days, with speeds reaching 30 to 40 mph, potentially impacting travel and outdoor activities.
Residents are advised to monitor alerts, secure loose objects, and prepare for sudden changes in weather. Commuters should expect slick roads and visibility reductions during evening and morning travel hours.
