MASON CITY, Iowa – Motorists traveling between Iowa and Wisconsin for Memorial Day weekend will need to detour as the Iowa 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River bridge between Lansing, Iowa, and Crawford County, Wisconsin, remains closed due to safety concerns.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), sensors detected movement on the bridge on May 17, prompting an immediate closure. Engineering assessments confirmed the structural shifts, and crews are continuing to monitor the bridge. A reopening timeline has not been determined, and no repair plan has been finalized.
Drivers are advised to use alternate Mississippi River crossings at La Crescent, Minnesota/Lacrosse, Wisconsin, or Marquette, Iowa/Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Although the bridge is closed to vehicle traffic, the river channel underneath remains navigable.
Both Iowa DOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation urge motorists to avoid the area, plan ahead, and check 511ia.org for real-time updates. Travelers can also subscribe to Your 511 alerts for text or email notifications.
The bridge will remain shut at least through Memorial Day. Officials say updates will follow once repair decisions are made.
