Des Moines, Iowa – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for much of central, northwest, and southeast Iowa as accumulating snow is expected to impact travel from overnight through Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall of 2 to 4 inches is forecast across a large portion of the state. In northwest and central Iowa, the advisory is in effect from midnight tonight until 3 p.m. CST Saturday. For central into southeast Iowa, including portions of the Des Moines metro, the advisory runs from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST Saturday.

Affected areas include Des Moines, Ames, Fort Dodge, Boone, Carroll, Jefferson, Denison, Marshalltown, Newton, Pella, Indianola, Ottumwa, and surrounding communities. Snow is expected to develop overnight, becoming more widespread during the morning hours before tapering off later Saturday.

The primary impact will be slippery road conditions, especially during the Saturday morning travel period. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are likely to become snow-covered, reducing traction and increasing stopping distances.

The advisory spans multiple counties across northwest, central, and southeast Iowa, covering both urban and rural travel corridors. While snowfall amounts are considered moderate, even small accumulations may lead to delays and increased crash risk due to cold pavement temperatures.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and use caution, particularly during the morning and early afternoon hours. Travelers are encouraged to check the Iowa 511 system via the 511 app, www.511ia.org, or by dialing 511 for the latest road conditions.

Additional winter weather statements or advisories may be issued if snowfall trends change.
