Des Moines, IA – A winter storm is sweeping across central and southern Iowa, bringing heavy snowfall that will persist through much of Wednesday, leading to hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect until midnight Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow intensity is expected to peak between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday, with total accumulations reaching 5 to 8 inches in affected areas. Snowfall will continue at lighter rates throughout the day before tapering off from west to east by the evening.

The storm is impacting numerous cities, including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Marshalltown, and Ottumwa, where slick and snow-covered roads have already been reported. Visibility is expected to be reduced during the Wednesday morning commute due to falling and blowing snow.

Travel conditions could be dangerous throughout the day, especially during morning and evening commutes. Motorists are urged to use caution and check Iowa 511 (www.511ia.org) for up-to-date road conditions.

Residents are advised to carry emergency supplies if traveling and stay updated on weather developments as conditions evolve.
