Des Moines, IA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for most of Iowa through 6 AM Sunday, as one of the season’s strongest winter storms continues to push across the state. The National Weather Service (NWS) Des Moines reports widespread heavy snow, dangerous road conditions, and worsening visibility from blowing and drifting snow.

An additional 6 to 9 inches of snow is expected today, bringing storm totals to 8–13 inches across central, north-central, west-central, and south-central Iowa. Nearly all major population centers—including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Mason City, Carroll, Ottumwa, Indianola, Marshalltown, Fort Dodge, and Council Bluffs—are experiencing severe winter conditions.

Winds are also increasing through the afternoon and evening, with gusts up to 35 mph expected. This will lead to significant blowing and drifting, producing low-visibility whiteouts in open areas and rural highways. NWS warns that travel may become very difficult to impossible, particularly after sunset.

Even after snowfall ends late tonight, strong winds may continue to impact travel into early Sunday as road crews work to clear drifts and packed snow. The NWS urges anyone considering travel to delay plans, noting that conditions are likely to improve only after daybreak Sunday.

For those who must be on the road, emergency officials recommend packing food, water, blankets, and a flashlight in case of becoming stranded. The latest travel conditions can be found using the Iowa 511 app, at 511ia.org, or by dialing 511.

Residents experiencing whiteout conditions, road closures, or heavy snow are encouraged to share updates to help others in their community stay informed.
