Des Moines, IA – Iowa residents should brace for high winds and colder temperatures starting Wednesday as a strong cold front moves across the region. Gusts exceeding 40 mph are expected, along with snow showers in northern Iowa that could reduce visibility on major highways, including I-35.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, Wednesday’s highs will drop sharply to the mid-30s to low 40s. Overnight temperatures will fall further into the upper 20s, driven by brisk northwest winds. These strong gusts will persist into Thursday, creating potentially hazardous conditions for commuters and outdoor activities.

For northern Iowa, light snow accumulation is anticipated, with less than half an inch expected by Wednesday evening. Residents traveling through the region should drive with caution, particularly in rural areas where visibility may be further impacted by drifting snow.

The five-day forecast for Des Moines predicts mostly sunny skies today with highs near 53°F and breezy conditions. Wednesday will be cloudy with a high of 42°F, followed by continued chilly and windy weather Thursday, with highs reaching 41°F. By Friday and Saturday, temperatures will stabilize in the mid-40s under partly sunny skies.
