DES MOINES, Iowa – With Thanksgiving travel fast approaching, Iowa transportation officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter driving conditions. From Des Moines to Cedar Rapids, motorists are being reminded that early maintenance and preparedness can prevent breakdowns and ensure safer travel as snow and cold return later this month.
According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, early November is the best time to inspect tires, check antifreeze, and test batteries before the first freeze. Officials also recommend replacing wiper blades and packing an emergency kit that includes a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, snacks, bottled water, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.
Motorists planning Thanksgiving trips along I-80, I-35, and U.S. 20 should expect heavier traffic and varying road conditions across the plains. “Winter weather can come quickly in Iowa, and even light snow can cause slick spots,” an Iowa DOT spokesperson said. “A few minutes of preparation before Thanksgiving can make your trip safer and more reliable.” Drivers are also urged to keep gas tanks at least half full, charge phones, and use 511ia.org for live traffic and plow updates.
As Iowa enters its winter season, state officials emphasize that proactive readiness is the best way to keep families safe and travel efficient across the state’s highways and rural routes through the busy Thanksgiving travel period.
