s Moines, Iowa – The first measurable snow of the fall season may blanket parts of northern Iowa on Saturday as colder air rushes in behind a strong front. The National Weather Service in Des Moines says a mix of rain and snow will spread across the state Saturday morning, with snow more likely north of U.S. Highway 20 from Sioux City to Waterloo.

According to the NWS, the probability of measurable snowfall is increasing across northern Iowa, where temperatures will drop sharply through Saturday afternoon and night. The transition zone between rain and snow will likely extend across central counties, including the Des Moines metro, while southeast Iowa remains mostly rain. By Sunday morning, refreezing of slush and wet pavement could lead to slick roads, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces.

The agency notes uncertainty remains in how far south snow will reach and how much accumulation will occur, but residents should prepare for the coldest stretch of the season so far. Overnight lows may dip into the 20s statewide by early Sunday. Iowa DOT advises drivers to monitor conditions closely, delay nonessential travel if roads become slick, and allow extra time for early Sunday commutes.

Residents are urged to charge devices, protect outdoor faucets and plants, and stay alert for potential freeze warnings. More updates will be issued as the system approaches Saturday morning.
