Des Moines, Iowa – Life-threatening cold is settling across Iowa, with dangerously low wind chills creating a serious frostbite risk for anyone outdoors late Thursday night into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect across much of the state, including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Mason City, and Fort Dodge. Wind chills are expected to fall between 30 and 40 below zero overnight, cold enough to cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as five to ten minutes.
Northern and central Iowa will experience the harshest conditions, where Arctic air deepens overnight and winds remain just strong enough to accelerate heat loss. In central Iowa, including the Des Moines metro, even short periods outside early Friday could quickly become dangerous without full winter protection. Rural areas may face increased risk due to limited shelter and longer response times in emergencies.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, wear multiple layers including face coverings and insulated gloves, and bring pets indoors. Officials also warn that water pipes may freeze quickly and vehicle batteries may fail in the extreme cold. Neighbors are encouraged to check on elderly residents and those without reliable heat.
Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect through Friday morning, with additional cold watches posted for parts of Iowa into the weekend as the Arctic air mass lingers.
