Des Moines, IA – Northern Iowa is bracing for dangerously cold temperatures as a strong cold front moves across the state Wednesday. Wind chills are expected to drop to -15 degrees during the morning, posing risks of frostbite and hypothermia for those unprepared. Blustery northwest winds could also reach gusts of 50 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will hover near 10°F Wednesday afternoon, falling sharply during the evening. Northwest winds of 25-30 mph will persist, making outdoor exposure dangerous without proper precautions. Flurries or light snow are possible early in the day, reducing visibility.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, bundle up with multiple layers, and ensure pets are kept indoors. Drivers along I-35 and I-80 should remain vigilant for strong crosswinds, especially on open stretches of highway. Those commuting early in the day should allow extra time due to reduced visibility and icy patches.

Thursday’s weather will remain frigid, with highs struggling to reach 22°F. Breezy conditions will linger, though winds are expected to gradually decrease. By Friday, a warming trend will begin, pushing daytime highs into the 30s before climbing into the 40s over the weekend. Saturday will bring sunny skies and milder conditions, offering a brief respite before colder temperatures return next week.
