Des Moines, IA – The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a Winter Storm Warning for nearly all of Iowa, in effect from Friday evening through early Sunday morning, as a major storm system moves across the region bringing heavy snow and hazardous travel conditions.
Forecasters are calling for widespread snowfall accumulations between 6 and 15 inches, depending on location. The heaviest amounts—10 to 15 inches—are expected across central and north-central Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, Mason City, and Waterloo. Southern counties such as Clarke, Decatur, Wapello, and Wayne can expect 5 to 8 inches, while far southern areas may see lighter totals.
Snow will begin this evening and continue through Saturday night, with intense snowfall rates expected overnight into Saturday morning. Winds up to 30 mph will lead to blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility at times.
Officials warn that travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially during the Saturday morning and evening hours. Residents are urged to delay all nonessential travel, and motorists should carry emergency supplies including flashlights, food, water, and blankets.

Snow will gradually taper off early Sunday, but icy and snow-packed roads are likely to persist into the start of next week.
