DES MOINES, Iowa — Valentine’s Day weekend will bring a gradual warmup across Iowa, with temperatures rising closer to seasonal averages while an unsettled weather pattern keeps the potential for rain and snow in the forecast through Feb. 20.

High temperatures on Friday and Saturday are expected to reach the low to mid-30s across much of central and southern Iowa, including the Des Moines metro. Northern portions of the state may remain slightly cooler, though even there temperatures will trend upward compared to the recent stretch of colder conditions. Overnight lows will continue to fall below freezing statewide, maintaining the risk for icy spots during the morning hours.

As milder air works into the region, several weak disturbances may move through the Midwest, bringing periods of light precipitation. In central and southern Iowa, precipitation may fall as a mix of rain and snow during the daytime, particularly when temperatures hover near or just above freezing. At night, colder conditions could allow any lingering moisture to transition back to snow.

Snow accumulations appear limited at this time, but brief slick travel conditions are possible, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Northern Iowa is more likely to see primarily snow, while southern areas could see more mixed precipitation depending on timing and temperature.

The milder trend is expected to continue into early next week, with daytime highs generally remaining near or slightly above freezing through Feb. 20. While this represents a break from harsher winter cold, conditions will still support wintry weather at times.

Residents with Valentine’s Day travel plans should monitor forecasts closely, as small changes in temperature could significantly affect precipitation type and road conditions during this active period.
