Des Moines, IA – A winter storm will bring heavy snowfall across much of Iowa from late Tuesday night through Wednesday, making travel hazardous and disrupting daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin around midnight in western Iowa before moving into central and eastern parts of the state. The heaviest accumulations, between 5 and 8 inches, are expected in central and southern Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, Waterloo, and Ottumwa. Snow rates could reach up to three-quarters of an inch per hour, reducing visibility and making roads slick.

Winter Storm Warning is in effect from midnight Tuesday until midnight Wednesday night. The storm is expected to impact both the morning and evening commutes on Wednesday, with snow tapering off by late afternoon into the evening.

Travelers are urged to use caution, as road conditions will deteriorate quickly. If travel is necessary, the Iowa DOT recommends keeping emergency supplies such as a flashlight, food, and water in vehicles.
