Burlington, Iowa – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could quickly develop across southeast Iowa Tuesday evening, placing several Mississippi River counties under a tornado watch until 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 32 includes Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Lee, Louisa and Van Buren counties. Storms forming across the region may produce isolated tornadoes, wind gusts over 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles and roofs.
Communities including Burlington, Mount Pleasant, Fort Madison and Fairfield sit within the watch area. Drivers along U.S. 61, U.S. 34 and Iowa Highway 2 could encounter sudden downpours and strong wind gusts that reduce visibility during the evening commute.
Local emergency managers urge residents to monitor weather alerts and review shelter plans before storms arrive. The safest place during a tornado warning is a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
The tornado watch remains active until 11 p.m. Tuesday as storms move across southeast Iowa. Additional warnings could be issued quickly if thunderstorms strengthen later this evening.
