Iowa – Rain is already soaking roads across Des Moines, and conditions are set to intensify quickly as multiple rounds of storms build through the afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, thunderstorms will increase later today with a marginal to slight severe risk developing across central Iowa. By Friday, that risk escalates to an enhanced level, meaning stronger storms with damaging winds, hail, and possible tornadoes become more likely.

Across the Des Moines metro, drivers along I-35, I-80, and Highway 65 should prepare for sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Rainfall may become heavy at times, leading to ponding on roads and slower travel. Winds could gust over 30 mph, especially near stronger storms.

Meteorologists now tracking several waves of activity. Showers remain widespread today with near 100% coverage, followed by additional storm development Friday afternoon and evening. This repeated rainfall increases the risk of localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Conditions begin to settle into the first weekend of April. Saturday turns cooler and breezy with highs near 49 and lingering clouds. By Sunday, sunshine returns with highs near the upper 50s, offering a brief break from the storm pattern.

Looking ahead, early next week trends milder with highs climbing back into the 50s and 60s. However, occasional rain chances may return by Tuesday as the active spring pattern continues.

Storm timing will be critical over the next 24 to 48 hours. Are you seeing heavier rain or thunder where you are?
