Des Moines, IA – Iowans are bracing for another frigid day Friday as wind chills drop below -5°F, creating potentially dangerous outdoor conditions. With high winds along the I-35 corridor, drivers and pedestrians are urged to take precautions.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will hover near 17°F during the day but feel much colder due to wind gusts up to 25 mph. By nightfall, the low is expected to plummet to 3°F, with northwest winds maintaining a wind chill of -10°F or lower. Residents should limit outdoor activity and wear appropriate cold-weather gear if venturing outside.

Looking ahead, Friday’s bitter cold will persist into the weekend. Saturday offers some relief, with highs reaching 36°F under mostly sunny skies, though gusts of 28 mph could make it feel cooler. Sunday continues the warming trend with a high near 32°F and calmer winds, while Monday promises a significant jump to 44°F under sunny and breezy conditions.

Drivers should remain cautious Friday, particularly along Interstate 35, where strong crosswinds and icy patches may create hazardous travel conditions. Motorists should allow extra time for commutes and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.

By next Tuesday, a high of 42°F is forecast, with temperatures climbing even further into Wednesday. This gradual warm-up offers a welcome break from January’s extreme chill.
