Des Moines, Iowa – Storms will threaten parts of Iowa Friday, with the strongest risk centered over the northwest portion of the state later in the day. While a few light showers moved through northern Iowa this morning, forecasters warn of stronger storms developing by Friday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, isolated severe thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and pockets of hail. Storms are expected to move southeast at 20 to 25 miles per hour, affecting areas along and north of U.S. Highway 20, including cities such as Sioux City, Fort Dodge, and Mason City.
Travelers along Interstates 35 and 29 may encounter reduced visibility, ponding water, and slick roads as storms intensify. Outdoor events across northwest Iowa may need to be delayed or canceled as organizers prepare for lightning and strong gusts. Emergency managers recommend moving to indoor shelter if storms approach and keeping multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to diminish overnight, but additional storm chances may continue into the weekend as unsettled conditions persist.
