Des Moines, IA – Light snow is set to arrive in central Iowa tonight, with freezing conditions expected to create slick roadways into Monday morning. Travelers should prepare for slower commutes, particularly along I-80 and I-35, as snowfall combines with sub-zero wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snowfall will begin tonight, starting in the west/northwest before spreading eastward. Accumulations are expected to remain under an inch, but isolated areas could see slightly higher totals. The snow may linger through the early morning commute, leaving roads icy and dangerous.

The Iowa Department of Transportation warns that nearly 75% of winter crashes occur with less than two inches of snow, often due to reduced visibility and slick surfaces. Motorists should allow extra travel time and increase following distances when driving in these conditions.

Tonight’s forecast calls for lows around 17°F with northwest winds of 5 to 9 mph, creating wind chills as low as 5°F. Monday morning will remain cold, with temperatures reaching only 26°F as the snow diminishes and skies gradually clear. Gusty winds up to 21 mph could persist, leading to additional travel challenges.

Looking ahead, the week will bring mostly sunny skies by Tuesday, with a high of 33°F. However, another cold front will drop temperatures to 16°F by midweek. Drivers and residents should remain vigilant as these fluctuating conditions could lead to additional icy spots on the roads.
