Des Moines, Iowa – Slick roads are slowing traffic across central Iowa right now, with icy patches lingering on major interstates just as drivers head out for the morning commute. Elevated roadways, ramps, and untreated surfaces are creating sudden slick spots across the Des Moines metro and along key corridors like I-35 and I-80.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines and Iowa DOT data around 4:50 a.m., many roads across the state remain partially covered with snow and ice despite gradual improvement. Subfreezing pavement temperatures are allowing moisture to refreeze, especially on bridges and overpasses.
In central Iowa, I-235 through Des Moines is seeing reduced traction in shaded areas, while I-35 from Ankeny to Ames and I-80 west toward Waukee and east toward Altoona remain impacted. Secondary roads and rural highways across Polk, Story, and Dallas counties are also reporting patchy ice.
Drivers should reduce speed, leave extra following distance, and avoid abrupt braking. Crews continue treating roadways, but slick conditions will persist through the morning commute.
Conditions should improve by late morning as temperatures rise, though additional advisories remain possible if refreezing continues.
