DES MOINES, Iowa – Showers and thunderstorms will sweep across Iowa beginning late Friday morning, with the strongest storms expected after 10 a.m. The National Weather Service says storms will intensify by midday, producing damaging winds as the primary hazard.
According to the NWS in Des Moines, the highest risk for severe weather covers central and eastern Iowa, though uncertainty remains for the southern extent of storms. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph as storms move to the southeast. While hail and heavy rain are secondary threats, forecasters stress that sudden wind bursts could cause tree damage and power outages.
Travel may become hazardous on Interstates 35 and 80 during the afternoon as storms cross the state. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and remain weather-aware. Those with outdoor plans should have shelter options ready and review severe weather warnings as they are issued.
Storms are expected to move out of the area by Friday night, but more updates could follow if the southern track of the system becomes more active.
