Des Moines, IA – Scattered thunderstorms and strong winds are expected to impact much of Iowa today, with hazardous weather continuing into the early afternoon and gusty conditions lasting through 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, severe thunderstorms remain possible this morning, particularly in eastern Iowa. These storms could bring large hail and damaging winds. While uncertainty remains, some areas could see strong storms, especially in the southeastern portion of the state.
In addition to the storm threat, non-thunderstorm winds are forecast to intensify across the state beginning in the afternoon. Gusts are expected to reach 40 to 45 mph, prompting a Wind Advisory from noon to 7 p.m. for nearly all of Iowa. The strongest winds will impact central and eastern regions, including Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo.
High-profile vehicles may experience difficulty on north-south highways due to strong crosswinds. Loose outdoor items should be secured to prevent damage or hazards.
While this type of spring wind pattern isn’t unusual, today’s combination of gusty winds and isolated storms heightens safety risks. Travelers are urged to monitor local alerts and adjust plans accordingly.
More updates will be issued as conditions evolve throughout the day.
