Des Moines, Iowa – A muggy Monday kicks off the week in Iowa, as thunderstorms and summer heat threaten to disrupt the morning commute and afternoon plans across Des Moines.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered thunderstorms will impact central Iowa through mid-morning on Monday, July 21st, before skies gradually clear. Rain chances begin tapering after 7 a.m., but isolated storms could linger into early afternoon. Temperatures will climb to 86°F, with light winds from the east and increased humidity creating an oppressive feel throughout the day.

Travelers along I-235 and Highway 69 should watch for slick pavement and localized ponding during the early hours. If you’re heading out before 9 a.m., allow extra time and avoid flooded intersections.

By Monday night, slight thunderstorm chances return after 1 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and lows around 74°F.

Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday will bring clearer skies and rising temperatures, with highs hitting 93°F and 95°F, respectively. While conditions improve, residents should stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
