Iowa – Snow skitters across dark pavement this morning as strong northwest winds sweep through central Iowa. Visibility drops suddenly in open areas, and drifting snow creates uneven, slick driving conditions during a critical holiday travel window.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Winter Weather Advisory and Wind Advisory remain in effect through early Monday morning. Northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph are gusting near 50 mph, while temperatures sit near 9 degrees. Wind chills have fallen to around 10 below zero, making brief exposure uncomfortable and dangerous.

Light snow continues early, with additional accumulations generally under one inch. Even small amounts are causing problems as wind lifts snow back onto roads. Travel along I-80, I-35, and Highway 5 may be hazardous at times, especially in rural stretches and on bridges.

As the snow tapers, colder air settles in fast. Meteorologists caution that flash freezing is likely as leftover moisture refreezes. Shiny pavement may hide black ice through the morning commute. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden slick spots.

Conditions gradually improve later Monday as winds ease and skies begin to clear. Monday night turns sharply colder, with lows near 13 degrees. Tuesday brings sunshine and calmer weather, though highs stay chilly in the upper 30s.

Looking ahead to New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day 2026, central Iowa stays quiet but cold. Skies trend partly sunny Wednesday, then mostly sunny on Thursday. Daytime highs hover in the mid-20s to mid-30s, keeping winter firmly in control during celebrations and travel.

Secure loose outdoor items today and dress in layers if heading out. Conditions can change quickly in blowing snow. Traveling through Des Moines this morning? Let us know how roads look where you are.
