Des Moines, Iowa – Gusty winds and lingering clouds will dominate central Iowa today, but a warmer, sunnier stretch is on the horizon by Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, light showers and non-severe thunderstorms have exited the region early Wednesday, leaving behind overcast skies and west-northwest winds gusting up to 25 mph. Temperatures will hover near 60°F this afternoon before dropping into the mid-40s tonight.
Drivers along I-235 and I-80 should remain alert for reduced visibility due to gusty conditions through the early evening. Though roads will remain dry, strong crosswinds could affect high-profile vehicles. Wind gusts are expected to peak near 25 mph before tapering by sunset.
Thursday marks the start of a warmer trend. Expect partly sunny skies with highs in the mid-60s, calm winds, and no significant weather hazards. Friday brings a slight (20%) chance of late-day showers, but most of central Iowa will stay dry until Saturday.
Looking ahead, Saturday and Sunday both carry a 40-60% chance of showers, mainly after 1 p.m. Each day will see highs in the mid-60s with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. Memorial Day (Monday) looks promising for outdoor plans, with mostly sunny skies and a high near 68°F.
