Des Moines, IA – A High Wind Warning has been issued for much of Iowa on Wednesday, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph, posing risks of power outages and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the warning will be in effect at different times across the state. In west-central and north-central Iowa, including Fort Dodge, Mason City, and Algona, winds will intensify from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, and Marshalltown, will experience the strongest winds from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Southeastern counties, including Ottumwa and Oskaloosa, will face high winds from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Sustained north winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are expected. These conditions could result in downed trees and power lines, leading to potential outages. Travel will be particularly difficult for high-profile vehicles, and residents are urged to use caution while driving.

Authorities advise securing loose outdoor objects, avoiding unnecessary travel, and preparing for potential power disruptions. Residents should remain alert to updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management offices as conditions develop throughout the day.
