Iowa Weather Alert: Gusty Winds Ease but Black Friday Snow May Snarl Travel Near Des Moines

Iowa — The wind still hums through fields across central Iowa this morning, carrying a sharp chill that signals winter’s first push. After a blustery night of 40–50 mph gusts, conditions are easing, but the weather pattern behind it will quickly shift toward colder air and the season’s first accumulating snow — just as Thanksgiving travel hits full stride.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines allowed the Wind Advisory to expire early this morning, yet the calmer skies won’t last long. After a sunny, brisk Wednesday, temperatures hover in the 30s to mid-40s through Thanksgiving Day before a powerful system develops over the central Plains.

By Friday evening, moisture and falling temperatures could combine to produce a rain-to-snow changeover across much of Iowa. Light accumulations are likely north of Interstate 80, with heavier bands possible in north-central Iowa where 1–3 inches could develop by early Saturday. The NWS warns that travel conditions could deteriorate quickly late Friday night into Saturday morning, especially along rural highways.

Thanksgiving Day itself looks calm and bright — a welcome travel window — with highs near 36°F and light winds. But those planning Black Friday shopping trips or weekend drives should stay weather-aware, as roads may turn slick and visibility could fall during bursts of snow.

Looking ahead, temperatures drop sharply behind this system. Highs over the weekend may struggle to reach the mid-20s, with lows dipping into the teens. Models also hint at a larger Arctic front sweeping across the Midwest early next week, possibly reinforcing a December cold snap for returning travelers.

For now, Iowans can enjoy a quiet Thanksgiving — but winter’s tone is set.
