Des Moines, Iowa – Funnel clouds could appear over southern and south-central Iowa this afternoon into early evening as scattered showers and weak thunderstorms develop across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, any funnel clouds that do form are expected to remain aloft and rarely touch the ground. The affected zone stretches from areas south of Des Moines down through counties like Clarke, Lucas, Marion, and Monroe.

While these funnels are typically short-lived and non-damaging, officials caution that a few may briefly touch down. Local emergency managers urge residents to stay weather-aware and report any sightings, especially if conditions quickly intensify.

Travelers on I-35 and Highway 34 should remain alert, particularly during peak heating hours between 2 and 6 p.m., when convective showers are most likely. Outdoor events or agriculture work should be paused temporarily if funnel activity is observed.

The NWS emphasizes this is not a tornado warning but a reminder to stay cautious as unsettled weather moves through the region. Additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen into evening.
