Mason City, Iowa – Funnel clouds may dip from the skies over Northern Iowa through Wednesday afternoon, as a stretch of unstable air moves across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, atmospheric conditions are favorable for brief, weak funnel clouds in areas stretching from Emmet and Kossuth counties east to Bremer County, including towns like Mason City, Waverly, and Algona. The advisory remains in effect until at least mid-afternoon.

These funnel clouds typically extend only a few hundred feet from the cloud base and rarely touch down or cause damage. No tornado warnings have been issued, and no immediate impacts are expected. Still, residents are urged to remain alert.

If a funnel cloud is spotted, officials recommend reporting it to the National Weather Service. Should rotation intensify or the system strengthen, a tornado warning may follow. In that case, seek shelter indoors, away from windows.

This weather pattern is not uncommon in mid to late summer across Iowa. Though usually harmless, it’s a reminder of how quickly conditions can shift.

Stay tuned for updates throughout the afternoon as the system moves eastward.
