Waterloo, Iowa – Drivers and residents across northeastern Iowa should stay alert this afternoon as conditions favor the development of funnel clouds, particularly south of Interstate 90 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a high-based funnel cloud risk is expected primarily in areas including Mason City, Waterloo, and Decorah. While most of these funnels will remain aloft and pose no danger, any that extend to the ground could quickly become a tornado, capable of causing damage and injury.

The higher-risk zone includes parts of Floyd, Chickasaw, and Howard counties, with visible activity likely in open skies. Emergency managers advise residents to monitor local weather reports and seek shelter immediately if a funnel approaches the ground. These funnel clouds typically form in unstable air masses and are often short-lived, but their unpredictability warrants caution.

Those working outdoors or driving in rural stretches should remain weather-aware throughout the afternoon. If skies begin to rotate or lower, head indoors to a sturdy building and avoid windows.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions through this evening. More updates will be issued if any funnels begin to touch down or pose additional threats.
