Decorah, Iowa – Drivers across northeast Iowa are running into flooded roads Monday morning after 3 to 5 inches of rain swamped the region overnight. The National Weather Service reports flash flooding is ongoing and will remain a threat until at least 11 a.m.
According to the agency, the Flash Flood Warning includes northeastern Floyd, southeastern Mitchell, northwestern Allamakee, Chickasaw, southern Howard, and Winneshiek counties. An additional inch of rainfall is possible, further straining creeks, streams, and low-lying areas.
Emergency managers say travel is hazardous in several towns including Decorah, Charles City, Cresco, New Hampton, and Waukon. Flooding has also been reported near Calmar, Lawler, and Spillville, where water is covering stretches of local highways and rural routes. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roads.
Officials stress the dangers of flash flooding, reminding residents that “turn around, don’t drown” applies to any vehicle encountering rising water. Even shallow flooding can sweep away cars and trucks.
The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect through late Monday morning, and additional advisories could be issued if rainfall persists.
