Des Moines, IA – The first snow of the season is set to arrive in Iowa on Saturday as a winter weather system brings a mix of rain and snow across much of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Des Moines.

Forecasters say snow will move into northwest Iowa by early morning, spreading into north-central areas by midday and mixing with rain farther south. Several inches of snow may accumulate from Fort Dodge to Mason City, while areas near Des Moines and southeastward are more likely to see a rain–snow mix due to slightly warmer temperatures.

By Saturday night, the main band of precipitation will taper off, though scattered snow showers could continue and briefly reduce visibility. Any additional accumulation is expected to be minor.

Temperatures will hover just above freezing through the day, which could limit snow totals and keep main roads mostly wet. However, untreated or elevated surfaces may become slick, especially in northern parts of the state.

Residents are urged to monitor local forecasts and use caution if traveling Saturday night as the season’s first snowfall arrives.
