Iowa – Breath turns white instantly this morning as sharp winds cut across central Iowa. Cars start reluctantly, and untreated pavement grows slick as temperatures sink and daylight offers little help.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through Friday morning, followed by an Extreme Cold Watch into Saturday. Wind chills between 30 and 35 below zero are expected at times, creating a serious risk of frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.

Blustery northwest winds may kick up light snow today, especially in open areas north and east of Des Moines. Even small amounts could drift across roadways. Reduced visibility is possible during brief snow bursts, and snow already on the ground may blow back onto cleared roads, slowing travel and cleanup efforts.

Conditions worsen after sunset as temperatures plunge. Any moisture left on roads, sidewalks, or parking lots may flash freeze, turning surfaces icy without warning. Drivers along I-35, I-80, and I-235 should plan extra time and reduce speeds, especially on bridges and ramps.

Friday remains brutally cold with little warming. Snow chances increase late Friday night into Saturday, with scattered light snow possible. Accumulations appear modest, but extreme cold limits the effectiveness of road treatments, increasing travel risk.

Sunday trends calmer with partial sunshine, though temperatures stay well below normal. Early next week brings gradual moderation, but cold weather continues to dominate central Iowa.

Residents should dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and keep pets indoors. Check on neighbors who may need help staying warm, and keep emergency kits ready if traveling.
