Quad Cities, IA/IL – Patchy dense fog is blanketing parts of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois this morning, creating hazardous travel conditions for early commuters from Cedar Rapids to Sterling. Visibility may drop to a quarter-mile or less in some areas, especially through 8 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, thinning clouds and abundant low-level moisture are driving the fog development. Conditions are especially risky along highways near Dubuque, Iowa City, and Freeport, where visibility can drop quickly over short distances.

Drivers are urged to use low-beam headlights, slow down, and maintain extra braking distance. The fog may shift rapidly—particularly in rural and low-lying areas—making travel unpredictable during the morning rush.

Local agencies have not issued a formal advisory, but confidence is high in continued fog formation through sunrise. Morning bus routes, deliveries, and commutes could all face delays or reduced safety.

Dense fog typically dissipates by mid-morning, but more updates may follow if conditions worsen.
