Cedar Rapids, IA – Drivers in eastern Iowa are being urged to use caution Thursday morning as shallow fog blankets much of the region, particularly along and north of Highway 30.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities, patchy but locally dense fog developed early this morning, reducing visibility in low-lying areas and near waterways. Conditions are expected to improve by 9 a.m.

The Iowa Department of Transportation reported visibility issues along U.S. Highway 151 near Anamosa in Jones County just after 4 a.m., where headlights and road markings were barely visible through the fog.

Officials advise motorists to allow extra travel time, slow down, and maintain a greater following distance if driving through fog. The greatest impacts are expected in areas along Highway 30 and nearby roadways, with visibility dropping to as low as a quarter mile in spots.

Drivers heading toward Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and surrounding rural counties should plan for potential delays during the morning commute.

The weather service emphasizes that fog can form quickly and without warning, particularly near rivers, streams, and valleys. Travelers are encouraged to remain alert until conditions clear later in the morning.
